DETERMINATION OF SHEAR STRESS IN BITUMINOUS SEALS OF CONCRETE ROAD BRIDGES WHEN THEY ARE SUBJECTED TO TRAFFIC LOADING

A MEASURING CELL WAS DEVELOPED WHICH CAN BE INCORPORATED UNDER OR ON A LEVEL WITH THE SEAL ON A BRIDGE AND FACILITATES SIMULTANEOUS MEASUREMENT OF COMPRESSIVE AND SHEAR STRESS. FOUR OF THE CELLS ARE TO BE INCORPORATED INTO ONE LANE OF A BRIDGE UNDER CONSTRUCTION. TWO OF THEM ARE TO BE AT THE LEVEL OF THE CONCRETE OF THE STRUCTURE AND COVERED BY THE SEAL, AND THE OTHER TWO ARE TO HAVE THEIR TOP EDGE AT THE LEVEL OF THE TOP SIDE OF THE SEAL AND BE COVERED DIRECTLY BY THE PROTECTIVE LAYER. THE AIM IS TO DETERMINE THE PROPORTION OF SHEAR FORCES ABSORBED BY THE MATERIALS IN THE SEALING LAYERS.
