FOR SOME YEARS THERE HAS BEEN INCREASED USE OF LIGHTWEIGHT CONCRETE FOR STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS; HITHERTO THE LIGHTWEIGHT AGGREGATE USED WAS ALMOST EXCLUSIVELY EXPANDED OR EXPANDED SHALE IN PREFERENCE TO CRUSHED FOAMED SLAG. THE OBJECT OF THE STUDY IS TO DETERMINE THE ELASTIC-MECHANICAL PROPERTIES, I.E. COMPRESSIVE AND SPLITTING TENSILE STRENGTH, MODULUS OF ELASTICITY AND COEFFICIENT OF SUBGRADE REACTION, OF LIGHTWEIGHT AGGREGATES PRODUCED FROM BLAST FURNACE SLAG (CRUSHED FOAMED SLAG, AGGREGATE AND LIGHTWEIGHT GRAVEL). THE FRACTURE BEHAVIOUR OF THIS LIGHTWEIGHT CONCRETE IS ALSO TO BE EXAMINED.
