WAYS OF PREVENTING OR DECREASING SALT DAMAGE TO FLORA ALONG MOTORWAYS AND ROADS

MOEGLICHKEITEN ZUR VERHINDERUNG BZW. VERMINDERUNG VON SALZSCHAEDEN AN DER FLORA ENTLANG VON AUTOBAHNEN UND STRASSEN

IN ORDER TO GUARANTEE TRAFFICABILITY AND SAFETY SNOW AND ICE HAS TO BE REMOVED FROM THE CARRIAGEWAY, AND SODIUM CHLORIDE AND CALCIUM CHLORIDE HAS BEEN USED FOR THIS PURPOSE. IT HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED THAT THESE DEICING AGENTS DAMAGE FLORA ALONG THE ROADS. A PRELIMINARY STUDY HAS SHOWN THAT IT MIGHT BE POSSIBLE, BY USING ADSORPTION MATERIALS (MAGNESIUM OXIDE), TO ABSORB SOME OF THE CHLORIDE IONS ON THE SURFACE OF THE SOIL, SO THAT THE AMOUNT ENTERING THE SOIL IS REDUCED. AN IMPORTANT FACTOR IS THE WAY IN WHICH THE CHLORIDE IONS CAN BE WASHED OUT OF THE ADSORPTION MATERIAL, AND THIS HAS TO BE IMPROVED. IT MIGHT ALSO BE POSSIBLE TO REMOVE A FURTHER PORTION OF THE CHLORIDE BY PLANTING VEGETATION WHICH LIKES SALT.
