FULL-SCALE TESTS ON A BITUMINOUS ROAD SURFACING REFINED BY THE ADMIXTURE OF POLYOLEFINS, AND PARTICULARLY POLYETHYLENE AND ITS DERIVATIVES

THE AIM IS TO CHECK THE ACCURACY OF THE RESULTS OF TESTS ALREADY UNDERTAKEN USING CONVENTIONAL MIXING AND PLACING METHODS. AN EXPERIMENTAL ROAD CONTAINING TWO HEAVILY STRESSED CROSSROADS IS TO BE USED. THE MIXTURE, CONSISTING OF A BITUMEN AND POLYETHYLENE MINERAL IS PRODUCED IN A LARGE-SCALE MIXING PLANT, IS LAID WITH CONVENTIONAL EQUIPMENT AND COMPACTED. BEFORE AND DURING THE LAYING THE CHARACTERISTIC TECHNICAL DATA OF THE MIXTURE, ITS PROBABLE ABRASION BEHAVIOUR AND THE DYNAMIC MODULUS OF ELASTICITY AT VARIOUS TEMPERATURES ARE BEING CONSTANTLY MONITORED. AFTER CONSTRUCTION DRILLED CORES ARE TAKEN TO CONTROL COMPACTION AND ABRASION. NON-DESTRUCTIVE CONTROL OF LAYER THICKNESS (ALUMINIUM FOIL) AND MEASUREMENT OF THE EVENNESS OF THE SURFACE OVER A PERIOD OF 5 YEARS ARE ANTICIPATED.
