TRAFFIC FLOW IN ROAD TUNNELS WITH TWO-WAY TRAFFIC

FOR ECONOMIC REASONS LONGER ROAD TUNNELS WHICH FORM PART OF ROADS HAVING SEPARATE CARRIAGEWAYS ARE BEING CONSTRUCTED WITH ONLY ONE TUNNEL TUBE, WHICH THEREFORE HAS TO CARRY TWO-WAY TRAFFIC. IN ORDER TO GUARANTEE GOOD TRAFFIC FLOW THE TUNNELS ARE EQUIPPED WITH SURVEILLANCE AND TRAFFIC GUIDANCE DEVICES WHICH ENABLE THE REQUIRED TRAFFIC CONTROL AND SAFETY MEASURES TO BE UNDERTAKEN. THE REACTION OF THE ROAD USER TO THE TRAFFIC CONTROL AND HIS BEHAVIOUR IN LONG SECTIONS OF TUNNEL IS UNKNOWN. THE AIM OF THE RESEARCH IS TO STUDY TRAFFIC-RELATED PARAMETERS IN EXISTING TUNNELS BY TAKING MEASUREMENTS. IT IS INTENDED TO USE THE RESULTS TO PRODUCE A MODEL WHICH WILL USE PRESCRIBED MAGNITUDES OR FORECAST VALUES TO PREDICT THE TRAFFIC SITUATION IN THE TUNNEL, AND/OR BY VARYING THE CONTROL AND TRAFFIC GUIDANCE DEVICES, TO AFFECT OR OPTIMISE THE TRAFFIC SITUATION. THE STUDIES ARE TO BE EXTENDED TO THE TUNNEL ACCESS RAMPS IN ORDER TO OBTAIN DATA ON THE FORMATION OF QUEUES AT THE TUNNEL ENTRANCE AND THE BREAK-UP OF LINES OF VEHICLES AT THE TUNNEL EXIT.
