SCATTER IN DETERMINING THE MODULUS OF ELASTICITY OF CONCRETE

VALUES FOR CALCULATING THE MODULUS OF ELASTICITY GIVEN IN THE STANDARDS VERY OFTEN DO NOT AGREE WITH ACTUAL VALUES, WHICH LEADS TO CALCULATED DEFORMATIONS NOT AGREEING WITH ACTUAL DEFORMATIONS. ACCORDING TO POMEROY THE FLUCTUATIONS WITHIN ONE TYPE OF AGGREGATE ARE AS GREAT AS BETWEEN THE VARIOUS AGGREGATE TYPES. ESTABLISHING THE MODULUS OF ELASTICITY IN RELATION TO THE AGGREGATE TYPE IS THEREFORE POINTLESS. IF DEFORMATIONS ARE TO BE CALCULATED ACCURATELY IN ADVANCE, THE MODULUS OF ELASTICITY OF THE ACTUAL CONCRETE USED HAS TO BE DETERMINED. HOWEVER THIS IS ONLY REASONABLE IF THE AREA OF SCATTER IN THE DETERMINATION OF THE MODULUS IS KNOWN. IN ORDER TO ESTABLISH THE POSSIBLE INFLUENCE OF CONCRETE AGE ON THE SCATTER IN THE TEST, CONCRETES OF THE STRENGTH CLASS B 400 AGED 3 AND 28 DAYS ARE TO BE EXAMINED. FOR THESE TESTS 60 BEAMS 12/12/36 CM3 ARE NEEDED TO DETERMINE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH.
