CAUSES OF TRAFFIC NOISE AND ITS PREVENTION

URSACHEN DES VERKEHRSLAERMS UND DESSEN BEKAEMPFUNG

IN THE FIGHT AGAINST TRAFFIC NOISE, INDUSTRY, TRAFFIC PLANNERS AND CAR DRIVERS CONTRIBUTE EQUALLY. AS FAR AS THE EXTERNAL NOISE FROM A VEHICLE IS CONCERNED, THE VEHICLE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY HAS FEW RESERVES LEFT; IN THE CASE OF COMMERCIAL VEHICLES NOISE REDUCTION BY ENCLOSING THE ENGINE AND THE ADJOINING UNITS STILL REMAINS A MAJOR PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE DRIVER CAN HAVE A POSITIVE INFLUENCE ON THE NOISE BEHAVIOUR OF THE VEHICLE BY ALTERING HIS DRIVING PATTERN; FURTHERMORE, LATER ALTERATIONS IN THE VEHICLE CAN HAVE AN EFFECT ON THE NOISE LEVEL, PARTICULARLY IN THE CASE OF MOTORCYCLES. THE MAXIMUM POSSIBLE DEGREE OF NOISE PREVENTION CAN ONLY BE ACHIEVED BY A COMBINATION OF THE VARIOUS PROTECTIVE MEASURES, WHICH IS SUITABLE FOR APPLICATION TO CURRENT CONDITIONS, SO THAT THE PROFESSION OF TOWN PLANNING WHICH HAS HITHERTO PLAYED A MINOR ROLE IN NOISE PREVENTION, WILL BE OF GREATER IMPORTANCE, E.G. IN THE LAYOUT OF QUIET RESIDENTIAL AREAS, FREE FROM TRAFFIC NOISE.
