TRAUMATOLOGICAL AND BIO-MECHANICAL ASPECTS OF CHILD PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENTS

TRAUMATOLOGISCHE UND BIOMECHANISCHE ASPEKTE DES KINDLICHEN FUSSGAENGERUNFALLES

108 PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENTS, IN WHICH CHILDREN WERE INVOLVED OVER A PERIOD OF THREE YEARS, WERE ANALYSED AT THE ACCIDENT SITE AND ON ADMISSION TO HOSPITAL. FROM THIS IT WAS ESTABLISHED THAT THE SEVERITY OF THE CHILDREN'S INJURIES INCREASES RELATIVE TO THE SPEED OF THE COLLISION. FOR A MORE PRECISE ANALYSIS OF THE PATTERN OF INJURIES RELATIVE TO TYPICAL VEHICLE OUTLINES, INJURY FREQUENCY AND INJURY SEVERITY DIAGRAMS WERE DETERMINED. THE INTEGRAL REAR TRUNK TYPE OF VEHICLE CAUSED FREQUENT AND SERIOUS INJURIES TO CHILDREN ON THE HEAD, ABDOMEN AND THIGH. THE BOX BODY FORM CAUSED THE MOST FREQUENT AND SERIOUS INJURY ACCIDENTS TO CHILD PEDESTRIANS. WEDGE-SHAPED VEHICLES ENDANGERED CHILD PEDESTRIANS LEAST OF ALL. IN THE LAST PART OF THE INVESTIGATION THE "RELATIVE INJURY GRADE FOR AGE GROUPS BELOW AND ABOVE 6 YEARS" WAS COMPUTED FROM INJURY-FREQUENCY AND -SEVERITY BY PARTS OF THE BODY. THE GREATEST DANGER TO YOUNG CHILDREN IS PREDOMINANTLY FROM SEVERE BRAIN DAMAGE, FOLLOWED BY ABDOMINAL INJURIES, PARTICULARLY BY RUPTURING OF THE INNER ORGANS. THE VULNERABILITY TO INJURY OF THE UPPER BODY IS REFLECTED ALSO BY THE FACT THAT IT WAS THE CAUSE OF DEATH OF THE 10 CHILDREN FATALLY INJURED IN THE ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION. THE PRIME REASON WAS A CENTRAL DEATH ALONE OR IN COMBINATION WITH RUPTURE OF THE INTERNAL ORGANS.
