DRIVER IMPROVEMENT - THE PRESENT STATE OF LONG TERM PROJECTS FOR THE REHABILITATION OF TRAFFIC OFFENDERS

DRIVER IMPROVEMENT - DERZEITIGER STAND DES LANGZEITPROJEKTES ZUR REHABILITATION VON VERKEHRSSTRAFTAETERN

THIS REPORT DESCRIBES THE PRESENT STATE OF LONG TERM PROJECTS FOR THE REHABILITATION OF TRAFFIC OFFENDERS. THE TRAINING PROGRAMME IS STILL MAINLY DESIGNED FOR OFFENDERS WHO WERE IMPRISONED FOR CAUSING SEVERE INJURY ACCIDENTS WHILST UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF DRINK. THE MOST SIGNIFICANT CHANGE CONCERNS THE LENGTHENING OF THE DURATION OF THE COURSE. THE GROUP SESSIONS WITH 6 TO 8 PARTICIPANTS HAVE BEEN INCREASED FROM 4 TO 6 IN NUMBER, EACH OF 2 TO 2 1/2 HOURS DURATION. THE SUBJECT MATTER OF THE COURSE HAS BEEN RETAINED. IN THE REVISION OF THE COURSE PROGRAMME SPECIAL EMPHASIS IS MADE UPON THE IMPROVEMENT OF SELF-CONTROL IN FUTURE BEHAVIOUR, PARTICULARLY IN RESPECT OF ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION AND DRIVING. IN ADDITION, WRITTEN MATERIAL HAS BEEN NEWLY COMPILED CONCERNING THE USE OF LEARNING PRINCIPLES IN CHANGING BEHAVIOURAL PATTERNS, WHICH SHOULD BE PARTIALLY UNDERTAKEN BY MEMBERS OF THE GROUP. THE PROGRAMME PLACES VERY HIGH DEMANDS UPON THE QUALIFICATION OF THE GROUP LEADER. IN ADDITION TO A KNOWLEDGE OF SUBJECTS IN THE FRAMEWORK OF PSYCHOLOGICAL STUDIES, IT IS NECESSARY TO HAVE AN UNDERSTANDING OF TRAFFIC PSYCHOLOGY, BEHAVIOUR THERAPY, CONVERSATION PSYCHO-THERAPY AND GROUP DYNAMICS. RESULTING FROM THE IMPORTANCE OF THE GROUP LEADERS CONDUCT FOR THE SUCCESSFUL CHANGE OF BEHAVIOUR BY COURSE PARTICIPANTS, AN INTENSIVE SEMINAR WITH THE TITLE "GROUP TRAINING FOR GROUP LEADERS" HAS BEEN ARRANGED AS PART OF THE DRIVER IMPROVEMENT PROJECT. OPINION IS GENERALLY AGREED THAT THE COURSE SHOULD, IN THE LONG TERM, BE AVAILABLE NOT ONLY TO IMPRISONED TRAFFIC OFFENDERS BUT ALSO TO DRIVERS WITH OFFENSIVE TRAFFIC BEHAVIOUR, BEFORE THEY BECOME INVOLVED IN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT.
