CONSTRUCTION OF TUNNELS USING SINGLE-SKIN CONCRETE LININGS

TUNNEL CONSTRUCTION WITH SINGLE LAYER LINING OF PRECAST CONCRETE SEGMENTS IS EXPLAINED WITH THE AID OF THREE COMPLETED PROJECTS, MAIN SEWERS IN STUTTGART AND HAMBURG AND AN UNDERGROUND RAILWAY TUNNEL IN MUNICH. IN THESE CASES GREATER DEMANDS ARE MADE ON THE DIMENSIONAL ACCURACY OF THE CONCRETE SEGMENTS. THE MANUFACTURE OF THE UNITS, THE DRIVING OF THE TUNNEL WITH THE AID OF COMPRESSED AIR AND THE ERECTION OF THE LININGS IS DESCRIBED. REINFORCED CONCRETE SEGMENTS OF THE TYPE DESCRIBED COST ABOUT HALF AS MUCH AS THE CONVENTIONAL CAST IRON LINING SEGMENTS.
