TRENDS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF REINFORCING AND PRESTRESSING STEELS

THE DEVELOPMENT OF REINFORCING AND PRESTRESSING STEELS DURING THE LAST 15 YEARS HAS PROCEEDED IN STAGES IN SUCH A MANNER AS TO ENHANCE AND INCREASE THE USEFUL QUALITIES. FOR REINFORCING STEEL TYPE III THE MOST IMPORTANT ALTERATIONS WERE THE INTRODUCTION OF DEFORMED BARS, SUITABILITY FOR WELDING, INCREASED FATIGUE STRENGTH, STATISTICAL QUALITY CONTROL AND ISSUE OF A STANDARD SPECIFICATION. A MODERN REINFORCING STEEL CANNOT BE COMPARED WITH THAT OF 15 YEARS AGO. SIMILAR DEVELOPMENTS HAVE TAKEN PLACE IN THE CASE OF WELDED REINFORCING FABRIC, ALTHOUGH NO SIGNIFICANT CHANGE HAS TAKEN PLACE DURING THE LAST 20 YEARS WITH REGARD TO THE BASIC CONCEPT OR THE STRENGTH OF THE WIRES. IN THE CASE OF PRESTRESSING STEELS DEVELOPMENTS HAVE BEEN IN THE DIRECTION OF PREVENTING STRESS CORROSION, BRITTLE FRACTURE AS WELL AS DELAYED FAILURE. STABILISED WIRES HAVING LOW RELAXATION REPRESENT CURRENT TECHNOLOGY. THE DEVELOPMENT OF HIGHER STRENGTHS AS WELL AS IMPROVED CORROSION RESISTANCE ARE AWAITED.
