ESVW II. EXPERIMENTAL SAFETY VOLKSWAGEN

ESVW II EXPERIMENTIER-SICHERHEITS-VOLKSWAGEN

THE ACTIVE AND PASSIVE SAFETY REQUIREMENTS WHICH THE ESVW II FULFILS FAR EXCEED THE STANDARD IN FORCE FOR PRODUCTION CARS TODAY. THESE HAVE BEEN COMPILED IN A SPECIFICATION MANUAL, WHICH DIFFERS FROM THE FIRST US-SEV MANUAL MAINLY BECAUSE OF FUNDAMENTAL CHANGES IN THE SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE DESTRUCTIVE TESTS. THE RESULTS OF THE TESTS ARE GIVEN FOR THE FOLLOWING AREAS: PASSIVE SAFETY - DESTRUCTIVE TESTS (RESTRAINT SYSTEMS, FRONTAL COLLISION WITH A WALL, FRONTAL COLLISION WITH A RIGID POST, VEHICLE-TO-VEHICLE BROADSIDE COLLISION, VEHICLE-TO-VEHICLE REAR COLLISION, FRONTAL COLLISION WITH A HEAVY VEHICLE, OVER-TURNING), ACTIVE SAFETY (CONSTANT YAW, INTERMITTENT YAW, STEERING RESTORING TORQUE, TRANSVERSE ACCELERATION, CONTROL WHEN VEHICLE BREAKS AWAY, STABILITY IN SIDE WIND, SENSITIVITY TO UNEVEN ROAD SURFACE, STEERING SENSITIVITY, RESISTANCE TO OVERTURNING, BRAKING BEHAVIOUR. IN ALL THE TESTS IT FULFILLED THE CONDITIONS LAID DOWN IN THE SPECIFICATION MANUAL, AND THE FIGURES WERE BELOW - SOMETIMES CONSIDERABLY BELOW - THE BOUNDARY VALUES. FINALLY, THE SAFETY FEATURES OF THE ESVW II ARE DESCRIBED, AND IT IS SHOWN TO WHAT EXTENT THEY HAVE BEEN INCORPORATED IN PRODUCTION VEHICLES AND THEIR OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT.
