INTRODUCTION TO MOTORISED ROAD TRAFFIC (EMS). PART 5: BEHAVIOUR AND EXPERIENCES OF JUVENILES IN TRAFFIC

EINFUEHRUNG IN DEN MOTORISIERTEN STRASSENVERKEHR (EMS). FUENFTER TEILBERICHT: VERKEHRSVERHALTEN UND VERKEHRSERLEBEN VON JUGENDLICHEN

REASONS FOR THE INVESTIGATION, ITS SCOPE, THE QUESTIONS ASKED AND THE WORK PLAN ARE DESCRIBED. A SECOND SECTION GIVES THE RESULTS OF THE PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATIONS WHICH WERE CARRIED OUT. THE MAIN RESEARCH CONSISTS OF 100 INTERVIEWS OF JUVENILES CONDUCTED IN JULY 1976. THE INTERVIEWS EMBRACED FIVE MAIN TOPICS: THE RELATION TO THE VEHICLE (FUNCTIONAL VALUE, THE RELATION WITH THE VEHICLE FOLLOWING PERIODS OF BREAKDOWN AND AFTER DOING THEIR OWN REPAIRS). DRIVING EXPERIENCES GENERALLY AND IN RELATION TO THEIR OWN DRIVING PREFERENCES (GENERAL DRIVING EXPERIENCE, SPEED, DRIVING WITH FULL THROTTLE ETC). DESCRIPTION OF THEIR OWN DRIVING, THEIR DRIVING IDEAL, AND DRIVING AS A SPORT, THE DESCRIPTION OF THE DRIVER IN SOCIAL CONTEXTS (IN THE COMPANY OF ADULTS, PEOPLE OF THE SAME AGE, ETC), AND THE GENERAL AND CONCRETE RELATION TO REGULATIONS (RELATION TO EXISTING TRAFFIC REGULATIONS, DRINKING AND DRIVING, DRIVING WHEN OVERTIRED, MOST FREQUENT FAULTS, DEFINED SITUATIONS, ACCIDENTS ETC). IN ADDITION TO THE EXPLORATIVE METHODS OF INVESTIGATION, SOME QUANTIFYING INSTRUMENTS WERE ALSO UTILIZED: A SEMANTIC DIFFERENTIAL FOR THE VIEW OF SELF AND IDEAL, A LIST OF ADJECTIVES FOR QUANTIFYING THE CHARACTERISTICS OF DRIVING EXPERIENCE, AND GUTTMAN SCALES FOR MEASURING DRIVING PLEASURE AND PRETENTIONS OF SUPERIORITY. THE APPENDIX CONTAINS THE MAIN POINTS OF DISCUSSIONS BY THE EXPERTS AND CONVERSATIONS WITH THE ADOLESCENTS, AS WELL AS THE QUESTIONNAIRE USED IN THE MAIN PART OF THE RESEARCH.
