SPAETFOLGEN NACH HIRNTRAUMEN BEI AELTEREN MENSCHEN

THE PAPER DEALS WITH THE LITTLE DISCUSSED PROBLEM OF DELAYED ACTION FOLLOWING CEREBRAL TRAUMA, ESPECIALLY IN OLD PEOPLE. THE PSYCHOSES WHICH RE-FORM QUICKLY OR SLOWLY ACCORDING TO THE DURATION OF UNCONSCIOUSNESS ARE DESCRIBED IN DETAIL. NEUROLOGICAL DEFECT SYNDROMES, VEGETATIVE DISTURBANCES - WHICH ARE ESPECIALLY DIFFICULT TO ASSESS - AND ORGANIC CHANGES OF STATE CAN OCCUR AS PERMANENT DAMAGE CAUSED BY BRAIN INJURY. TO DETERMINE THE ORGANIC CHANGES OF STATE A PSYCHOPATHOMETRIC DEFECT TEST WAS DEVELOPED CONSISTING OF A QUESTIONNAIRE IN WHICH THE INJURED PERSON ASSESSES HIMSELF, A CONSTRUCTION TEST, IN WHICH GIVEN SIGNS HAVE TO BE COMPLETED, AND A SPEED TEST. THE OLDER A PERSON WITH BRAIN INJURIES IS, THE MORE DIFFICULTIES ARE EXPECTED IN HIS RE-SETTLING INTO HIS ACCUSTOMED LIFE-STYLE. LIKEWISE THE LIMITING VALUE FOR DURATION OF UNCONSCIOUSNESS AT WHICH NO DAMAGE RESULTS IS SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER FOR PERSONS OVER 45 YEARS THAN FOR YOUNGER PERSONS. GENERALLY THERE ARE MANY UNANSWERED QUESTIONS WHICH CAN BE ANSWERED BY DEVELOPING MODERN TEST METHODS. THIS PAPER WAS PRESENTED AT THE 38TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF THE GERMAN SOCIETY FOR ACCIDENT MEDICAL SCIENCE, INSURANCE, SOCIAL CARE AND TRAFFIC MEDICINE, 21-23 NOVEMBER 74, IN BERLIN.
