REDUCTION IN PERFORMANCE DUE TO ALCOHOL WITH RESPECT TO AGE

DIE ALKOHOLBEDINGTE LEISTUNGSMINDERUNG IN ABHAENGIGKEIT VOM LEBENSALTER

RESEARCH WAS CONDUCTED TO ESTABLISH TO WHAT EXTENT DIFFERENCES RESULT BETWEEN OLDER AND YOUNG PEOPLE WITH REGARD TO THE HARMFUL EFFECTS OF ALCOHOL ON PERFORMANCE IN ROAD TRAFFIC. TWO TEST GROUPS WITH PERSONS AGED 20 TO 30 AND 55 TO 65 YEARS RESPECTIVELY CARRIED OUT PERFORMANCE TESTS USING THE VIENNA DETERMINATION MACHINE AND ON THE BECK TENSOR WHILST SOBER, AND AFTER CONSUMPTION OF CERTAIN QUANTITIES OF ALCOHOL. IN ADDITION, TEST SUBJECTS WERE QUESTIONED ON SELF-ASSESSMENT OF THEIR DRIVING ABILITY. RESULTS SHOW THAT IN A SOBER STATE THE PSYCHOPHYSICAL PERFORMANCE ABILITY OF THE YOUNGER PERSONS WAS GREATER THAN WITH THE OLDER PERSONS, RELATED TO PERFORMANCE RANGE. UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ALCOHOL, PERFORMANCE BEHAVIOUR WORSENED IN BOTH TEST GROUPS PARTLY UNIFORMLY AND PARTLY DIFFERENTIALLY. IN THE SELF-ASSESSMENT TESTS IT WAS SURPRISING THAT THE OLDER PERSONS ASSESSED THEIR ALCOHOL LEVEL LOWER THAN THE YOUNGER ONES. IN ADDITION A DELAYED NORMALISATION OF PERFORMANCE CAPACITY WAS SHOWN WITH THE OLDER PERSONS. THIS PAPER WAS PRESENTED AT THE 38TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF THE GERMAN SOCIETY FOR ACCIDENT MEDICAL SCIENCE, INSURANCE, SOCIAL CARE AND TRAFFIC MEDICINE, 21-23 NOVEMBER 74, IN BERLIN.
