INVESTIGATIONS OF FRONTAL COLLISIONS

UNTERSUCHUNGEN BEI EINER FRONTALKOLLISION

THE REPORT DEALS WITH MEDICAL AND TECHNICAL INVESTIGATIONS CONCERNING INDIVIDUALS SUFFERING SEVERE OR FATAL INJURIES WHEN WEARING SAFETY BELTS. THE FOLLOWING TOPICS ARE DISCUSSED ON THE BASIS OF A CASE IN WHICH MANY OF THE RELEVANT ASPECTS ARE PRESENT: THE PARTICULAR INVESTIGATION AND RECONSTRUCTION METHODS USED, THE APPLICABILITY OF THE COMPUTERIZED RECONSTRUCTION METHOD SMAC (SIMULATION MODEL OF AUTOMOBILE COLLISIONS) TO THE CASE OF A FULLY PLASTIC HEAD-ON COLLISION, METHODS FOR ASSESSING THE FORCES IN THE SAFETY HARNESS, AND THE INFLUENCE OF EXCESS LOADING FROM A REAR SEAT PASSENGER ON A STRAPPED-IN OCCUPANT. A FULLY PLASTIC FRONTAL COLLISION BETWEEN A FIAT AND A BMW 2800 IS DESCRIBED. EVALUATION OF THE RESULTS SHOWS THAT SMAC HAS ONLY LIMITED APPLICABILITY TO FULLY PLASTIC COLLISIONS AND THAT ACCURATE INFORMATION CONCERNING THE DEFORMATION CHARACTERISTICS OF THE VEHICLE IS INDISPENSIBLE. THE RUPTURE OF THE SAFETY BELT CAN BE ATTRIBUTED TO EXCESS LOADING BY THE REAR SEAT PASSENGER. THE FAILURE IS HOWEVER NOT SOLELY DUE TO EXCESS LOADING, BECAUSE IT HAD BEEN PARTIALLY SEVERED BY SEAT FITTINGS.
