INVESTIGATIONS CARRIED OUT EVERY SIX MONTHS BY BAST ON SAFETY BELT FITTING AND WEARING BEHAVIOUR SHOW AN INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF BELTS FITTED TO CARS DUE TO THE INTRODUCTION OF COMPULSORY FITTING AND WEARING. IN THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE ALMOST 100 PERCENT OF PRIVATE CARS WILL BE FITTED WITH SAFETY BELTS. THE PERCENTAGE OF DRIVERS WEARING BELTS (BASED ON ALL PRIVATE CARS) INCREASED FROM MARCH TO SEPTEMBER 1977 ON RURAL ROADS BY 3 PERCENT TO 52 PERCENT AND ON URBAN ROADS BY 5 PERCENT TO 38 PERCENT, ON MOTORWAYS IT REDUCED BY 1 PERCENT TO 70 PERCENT. THE PERCENTAGE OF FRONT PASSENGERS WEARING BELTS ON URBAN ROADS WAS 39 PERCENT, ON RURAL ROADS 54 PERCENT, AND ON MOTORWAYS 73 PERCENT. IT WAS, IN ADDITION, ESTABLISHED THAT THE REGULATION REQUIRING THAT CHILDREN MUST ONLY TRAVEL ON THE REAR SEAT OF A PRIVATE CAR IS NOW FOLLOWED LESS THAN PREVIOUSLY. REGARDING THE WEARING OF SAFETY HELMETS IT WAS ESTABLISHED THAT THE PERCENTAGE WEARING THESE ON MOTORCYCLES INCREASED BY 7 PERCENT TO 90 PERCENT. DRIVERS OF MOPEDS AND MOTORCYCLES WEARING THEM INCREASED BY 2 PERCENT TO 18 PERCENT, WHILST THE PERCENTAGE OF PASSENGERS WEARING THEM REMAINED MORE OR LESS CONSTANT (44 AND 10 PERCENT RESPECTIVELY).
