ON THE SECTION OF THE TAUERN MOTORWAY BETWEEN PUCH AND GOLLING AN UNREINFORCED CONCRETE SURFACING WAS LAID WHICH HAD NO EXPANSION JOINTS AND SHORT DISTANCES BETWEEN THE TRANSVERSE CONTRACTION JOINTS. THIS METHOD OF CONSTRUCTION IS CURRENTLY THE MOST PROGRESSIVE AND THE MOST ECONOMICAL. PAVEMENT THICKNESS, DISTANCE BETWEEN CONTRACTION JOINTS AND THE DEPTH OF THE JOINT CUT CAN BE CHECKED THEORETICALLY AND IN PRACTICE. THE UNPOURED CONTRACTION JOINT HAVING A NARROW JOINT CUT IS TO BE TESTED IN PRACTICE. THEORETICAL STUDIES HAVE SHOWN THAT NO INCREASE IN LONGITUDINAL COMPRESSIVE FORCES IS EXPECTED IN LATER YEARS IN THE SEALED JOINT; IN CONTRAST, ONE CAN RECKON ON A DECREASE IN THESE FORCES WITH TIME BECAUSE OF SHRINKAGE OF THE CONCRETE. THIS ASSUMPTION CANNOT BE MADE WITH THE OPEN CONTRACTION JOINT, BECAUSE THE TYPE AND EXTENT OF THE FILLING OF THE JOINT WITH ABRASIVE MATERIAL, DUST AND GRITTING SAND IS UNKNOWN. THE AIM OF THE PROJECT IS TO COMPLETE THE SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION ON THE NARROW UNPOURED CONTRACTION JOINT.
