PIECES OF OLD BRIDGE STRUCTURES ARE TO BE EXAMINED TO DETERMINE THE EXTENT TO WHICH CORROSION PROTECTION WAS EFFECTIVE; THE PROTECTION OF THE STEEL REINFORCEMENT CAN BE DETERMINED FROM THE DEPTH OF THE CARBONIZED LAYER IN RELATION TO THE POSITION AND STRESS OF THE SURFACE BY WEATHER AND DEICING SALT, AND FROM THE DEPTH OF PENETRATION OF THE CHLORIDE IONS. THE STUDIES WILL COVER PRESENT CONDITION OF THE BRIDGES, CHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF CARBONATION DEPTH AND CHLORIDE CONTENT, AND MECHANICAL STUDIES OF THE CONCRETE AND STEEL.
