ALIGNMENT AND DESIGN OF TUNNEL RAMPS ON FEDERAL GERMAN ROADS AND MOTORWAYS

TRASSIERUNG UND GESTALTUNG VON TUNNELRAMPEN AN BUNDESSTRASSEN UND AUTOBAHNEN

AT THE PRESENT TIME MORE THAN 40 TUNNELS ARE PLANNED OR UNDER CONSTRUCTION IN THE AUSTRIAN NETWORK OF MOTORWAYS AND MAIN ROADS. THE AIM OF THE PROJECT IS TO WORK OUT PRINCIPLES WHICH SHOULD BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT IN THE DESIGN OF SECTIONS OF ROAD CONTAINING TUNNELS. THESE RELATE TO ALIGNMENT OF THE ROAD AROUND THE ENTRANCE OF THE TUNNEL AND THE TUNNEL RAMPS, THE TRANSITION BETWEEN THE OPEN-AIR SECTION AND THE TUNNEL, AND THE LAYOUT AND DESIGN OF TRAFFIC GUIDANCE DEVICES IN THE AREA OF THE TUNNEL RAMPS. AN EXAMINATION IS ALSO TO BE MADE OF ASPECTS SUCH AS CLEARANCE OF SNOW ON THE TUNNEL RAMPS AND AT THE ENTRANCE, DESIGN OF OPERATIONAL ENTRIES AND EXITS AND THE TUNNEL ENTRANCE, TEMPORARY SINGLE-TUBE TUNNEL OPERATION IN TWIN-TUBED MOTORWAY AND ROAD TUNNELS, AND TRAFFIC DIVERSION MEASURES CARRIED OUT WHEN THE TUNNEL IS CLOSED.
