WIND TUNNEL TESTS ON SIDE WIND INTENSITY ON BRIDGES

WINDKANALVERSUCHE UEBER SEITENWINDINTENSITAET AUF BRUECKEN

PRINCIPLES FOR EVALUATING THE INFLUENCES OF BRIDGE CROSS- SECTION, CANTILEVER SLAB DIMENSIONS, PARAPETS, GUARDRAILS AND WIND BARRIERS ON SIDE WINDS, AND THUS ON THE SAFETY OF VEHICLES, ARE TO BE CREATED BY MEANS OF A SERIES OF WIND TUNNEL TESTS. THIS SHOULD MAKE IT POSSIBLE, WITH THE AID OF METEOROLOGICAL DATA, TO APPLY SUITABLE CONSTRUCTION MEASURES TO REDUCE THE DANGER OF ACCIDENTS CAUSED BY SIDE WINDS AT THE BRIDGE PLANNING STAGE. MAIN ROAD BRIDGE CROSS SECTIONS HAVING 2 LANES AND MOTORWAY BRIDGE CROSS SECTIONS HAVING 4 OR 6 LANES ARE BEING EXAMINED. IN THE CASE OF THE MOTORWAY BRIDGES, THE EFFECT OF GUARDRAILS AND FENCES ON THE CENTRAL RESERVE IS ALSO BEING STUDIED. THE WELL-KNOWN AERODYNAMIC COEFFICIENTS FOR VEHICLES CAN BE DEDUCED FROM ACTUALLY OCCURRING FORCES. A STUDY IS ALSO TO BE MADE TO SEE WHETHER CERTAIN CROSS SECTION DESIGNS GIVE RISE TO PARTICULARLY MARKED WIND SPEED FLUCTUATIONS ABOVE THE CARRIAGEWAY.
