DEVELOPMENT OF A METHOD FOR THE RAPID EVALUATION OF THE FROST SENSITIVITY OF SOILS

ENTWICKLUNG EINES VERFAHRENS ZUR SCHNELLEN BEURTEILUNG DER FROSTEMPFINDLICHKEIT VON BOEDEN

WITH THE AID OF A NEW MEASURING INSTRUMENT A RAPID TEST (48 HOURS) IS TO BE DEVELOPED FOR STUDYING THE FROST SENSITIVITY OF SOILS. BY TAKING ACCOUNT OF GENERAL PHYSICAL SOIL PROPERTIES AND CLIMATIC CONDITIONS OF THE ROAD SECTIONS STUDIED, THE RESULTS OF THE TESTS WILL ENABLE PREDICTIONS TO BE MADE ON THE FROST BEHAVIOUR OF SIMILAR SOILS IN OTHER ROAD SECTIONS WHICH ARE ONLY DETERMINED BY THE SOIL PHYSICS CHARACTERISTIC VALUES. MOREOVER QUICKLY ADAPTED FROST PROTECTION MEASURES ARE TO BE DEVELOPED FOR SPECIAL CASES OF APPLICATION, AND THE RELATIONS BETWEEN FROST SENSITIVITY AND BEARING CAPACITY OF A SOIL ARE TO BE CLARIFIED. THIS WILL RESULT IN SAVINGS IN FROST BLANKET MATERIAL, DUE TO EXTENSIVE USE OF TESTED LOCAL MATERIAL BOTH IN ITS NATURAL AND IN A STABILIZED FORM.
