DETERMINATION OF VISIBILITY DISTANCES IN ROAD TUNNELS

SICHTWEITENBESTIMMUNG IN STRASSENTUNNELS

THE TEST PROGRAMME "DISTURBED VISION" IS INTENDED TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE ECONOMIC DESIGN OF VENTILATION EQUIPMENT IN ROAD TUNNELS. VISIBILITY DISTANCE IS A BASIC PARAMETER FOR SAFE TRAFFIC FLOW. AFTER ESTABLISHMENT OF THE METHOD OF MEASUREMENT AND VISIBILITY DISTANCE AS FUNCTIONS OF DISTURBED VISION AND THE USE OF EQUIPMENT, TESTS ARE BEING CARRIED OUT WITH DIESEL ENGINES BOTH ON A RIG AND IN THE TUNNEL. TRAFFIC COUNTS ARE ALSO BEING CARRIED OUT OVER A PERIOD OF 12 MONTHS, TOGETHER WITH MEASUREMENTS OF AIR, SPEED AND VISIBILITY. FROM THE RESULTS RECOMMENDATIONS ARE BEING DERIVED FOR THE APPLICATION OF VISIBILITY EQUIPMENT, EVALUATION RECOMMENDATIONS AND IMPROVEMENT PROPOSALS.
