INFLUENCE OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF AGGREGATES ON THE DURABILITY (ABRASION) AND SKIDDING RESISTANCE OF BITUMINOUS ROAD SURFACINGS

RECENTLY VERY GREAT DIFFERENCES IN THE WEAR OF BITUMINOUS ROAD SURFACINGS HAVE BEEN OBSERVED ON ROADS WHICH UNDERGO PARTICULARLY SIGNIFICANT STRESS BY STUDDED TYRES. IT WAS ESTABLISHED THAT, APART FROM THE QUALITY OF THE AGGREGATES, THE SIZE OF THE LARGEST PARTICLE, THE PROPORTION OF COARSE PARTICLES AND THE HARDNESS OF THE MORTAR INFLUENCE THE DURABILITY OF THE SURFACING. 15 DIFFERENT TYPES OF SURFACINGS ARE TO BE LAID ON AN EXPERIMENTAL SECTION OF THE INN VALLEY MOTORWAY BETWEEN WEER AND VOLDERS DURING THE LAYING OF THE ASPHALTIC CONCRETE SURFACING. THE INDIVIDUAL TYPES OF SURFACING ARE TO BE THOROUGHLY TESTED, BOTH WITH RESPECT TO THE QUALITY OF THE STONE AND THE MIX DESIGN. THE COMPLETED SECTIONS OF SURFACING WILL THEN BE OBSERVED FOR SOME YEARS FOR ABRASION AND SKIDDING RESISTANCE IN RELATION TO TRAFFIC VOLUME AND STUDDED TYRES USED. THE AIM OF THE RESEARCH PROJECT IS TO ESTABLISH RELATIONS BETWEEN THE COMPOSITION AND QUALITY OF THE SURFACE MIXTURE AND ABRASION CAUSED BY STUDDED TYRES.
