THERE HAS BEEN NO SCIENTIFIC EXPLANATION OF THE ADVANTAGES OF THESE ROADS OVER NORMAL-WIDTH TWO-LANED ROADS AND OVER TWO-LANED MOTORWAYS RESERVED FOR FAST TRAFFIC, ALTHOUGH FROM A SUBJECTIVE ANGLE OVERWIDE TWO-LANED ROADS AND TWO-LANED MOTORWAYS SEEM TO OFFER GREATER DRIVING COMFORT. AS REGARDS THE MAXIMUM CAPACITY AND ALL OTHER TRAFFIC ENGINEERING VIEWPOINTS, ONE HAS TO RELY ON ESTIMATES. THE AIM OF THIS RESEARCH PROJECT IS TO STUDY THE VARIOUS ROAD TYPES WITH RESPECT TO SAFETY AND ECONOMIC EFFICIENCY, AND TO EVALUATE AND COMPARE THE CAPACITY AND THE DRIVING COMFORT WHICH THEY OFFER IN ACCORDANCE WITH OBJECTIVE CRITERIA. AFTER THIS STUDY IT WILL BE POSSIBLE TO ASSESS THE VALUE OF OVERWIDE TWO-LANED ROADS AND TWO-LANED MOTORWAYS IN RELATION TO NORMAL-WIDTH TWO- LANED ROADS, AND THUS TO AVOID POSSIBLE WRONG INVESTMENTS THROUGH ERRONEOUS CHOICE OF CROSS-SECTION.
