PREVENTION OF FROST DAMAGE BY ELECTRONLYTIC MEANS

BEFORE NOW, IN ORDER TO PREVENT FROST DAMAGE, THE SINGLE PRACTICAL COUNTERMEASURE WHICH HAS BEEN APPLIED IS THE REMOVAL OF THE FROST-SUSCEPTIBLE SOIL AND ITS REPLACEMENT BY A SUITABLE FROST RESISTANT SAND/GRAVEL MIXTURE. HOWEVER, THIS METHOD IS VERY EXPENSIVE, APART FROM THE FACT THAT THE SAND-GRAVEL MIXTURES SUITABLE FOR THIS PURPOSE ARE NOT AVAILABLE EVERYWHERE IN SUFFICIENT QUANTITIES. BY MEANS OF VARIOUS RESEARCH IT WAS ESTABLISHED THAT AN ELECTRIC POTENTIAL BUILDS UP DURING THE PERIOD OF FROST BETWEEN THE FREEZING LAYER OF SOIL NEAR THE SURFACE AND THE NOT-YET FROZEN LAYER BELOW IT. IT IS OBVIOUS THAT THE ELECTRIC VOLTAGE, WHICH TENDS TO CAUSE WATER FLOW, LEADING TO THE FORMATION OF ICE LENSES, SHOULD BE ELIMINATED, FOR EXAMPLE BY THE INTRODUCTION OF SHORT-CIRCUIT BARS OF ELECTRICALLY CONDUCTING MATERIALS. AS PART OF THE RESEARCH PROJECT STUDIES RELATING TO THIS ARE TO BE CARRIED OUT TOGETHER WITH TESTS IN THE LABORATORY, ON CONSTRUCTION SITES AND ON EXISTING FROST-PRONE ROADS, WITH THE AIM OF DEVELOPING A METHOD BY MEANS OF WHICH A NUMBER OF OLD FROST-PRONE ROAD SECTIONS CAN BE ECONOMICALLY IMPROVED; THIS WOULD INVOLVE THE INCORPORATION OF SHORT-CIRCUIT CONDUCTORS WITHOUT DAMAGING THE ROAD SURFACE OR CAUSING ANY SIGNIFICANT DISRUPTION TO TRAFFIC.
