STUDY OF TRAFFIC VOLUMES WHICH DETERMINE THE DESIGN OF ROAD CROSS SECTIONS IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE LEVEL OF SERVICE

THE TRADITIONAL METHODS OF DESIGNING ROAD CROSS SECTIONS START FROM THE AVERAGE DAILY TRAFFIC VOLUME IN A YEAR. THROUGH A DEFINED PERCENTAGE OF THIS FIGURE THE DETERMINATIVE HOURLY TRAFFIC VOLUME IS ESTABLISHED. THE BASIS FOR THIS IS GENERALLY EACH HOURLY TRAFFIC VOLUME WHICH IS REACHED OR EXCEEDED DURING 30 HOURS OF THE YEAR. CURRENTLY ONLY A FIGURE SERVES AS THE PARAMETER, INDEPENDENT OF THE TYPE AND STRUCTURE OF THE TRAFFIC. THE ANALYSIS OF THE DURATION CURVES OF TRAFFIC SHOWS THAT THE REDUCTION IN THE 30TH HOUR IS VARIED, AND THE DURATION CURVES THEREFORE DIFFER NOT ONLY QUANTITATIVELY BUT ALSO QUALITATIVELY. WITH THE INTRODUCTION OF 40 PERMANENT TRAFFIC COUNTING POINTS IN AUSTRIA, IT WAS POSSIBLE FOR THE FIRST TIME TO EXAMINE IN DETAIL THE TRAVEL LINES DIVIDED ACCORDING TO DIRECTION AND THE DURATION CURVES AT THE END OF THE YEAR. A FURTHER NEW ASPECT IS OFFERED BY THE INTRODUCTION OF THE "LEVEL OF SERVICE", A MEASURE OF QUALITY FOR THE AMENITY VALUE OF A JOURNEY OVER A SECTION OF ROAD UNDER THE PREVAILING CARRIAGEWAY AND TRAFFIC CONDITIONS. THE OBJECTIVE OF THE WORK IS TO ANALYSE THE TRAVEL LINES AND DURATION CURVES OBTAINED FROM THE AUTOMATIC TRAFFIC COUNTING POINTS, TO ASSOCIATE THEM WITH THE LEVEL OF SERVICE, AND TO DERIVE PLANNING AND DESIGN PRINCIPLES FROM THEM.
