THE EFFECT OF ICE ON THE DESIGN OF BRIDGE PIERS FOR THE NORTHUMBERLAND STRAIT CROSSING

THE EFFECT OF ICE ON THE DESIGN OF BRIDGE PIERS FOR THE NORTHUMBERLAND STRAIT CROSSING IS CONSIDERED AS ONE OF THE MAJOR PROBLEMS TO THE REALIZATION OF THIS PROJECT. TO ARRIVE AT AN ACCEPTABLE SOLUTION, THE ENGINEERS HAD TO ESTABLISH THE NATURE OF ICE TO WHICH THE STRUCTURES WILL BE SUBJECTED. ICE SURVEYS AND STUDIES OF ICE FORMATION WERE DONE IN ORDER TO DETERMINE THE PHYSICAL PROPERTIES AND THE THICKNESSES OF ICE FLOES THAT ARE ENCOUNTERED IN STRAIT OF NORTHUMBERLAND. A LABORATORY CONSTRUCTED FOR THAT PURPOSE AT COLDBROOK, N.B., WAS USED TO PERFORM MODEL STUDIES. THESE STUDIES PROVIDED MEANS OF OBSERVATION ON THE MODE OF FAILURE OF ICE FLOES AND FORCE MEASUREMENTS ON THE PIERS. THEORETICAL ANALYSES WERE DONE TO DETERMINE THE FORCES RESISTED BY THE STRUCTURE. TO DO SO, THE STUDIES ESTABLISHED THE PROCESS OF DESTRUCTION OF ICE FLOES AND PRESSURE RIDGES HITTING THE STRUCTURE. THE STUDIES HAVE LEAD TO THE CONCLUSION THAT THE PIER PROPOSED FOR THE BRIDGE OF THE NORTHUMBERLAND CROSSING IS FEASIBLE AND SAFE. /AUTHOR/
