APPARATUS AND INSTRUMENTATION FOR CREEP AND SHRINKAGE STUDIES

LONGER CONCRETE BRIDGE SPANS HAVE BECOME FEASIBLE DURING THE PAST 2 DECADES AS A RESULT OF INCREASED PERMISSIBLE WORKING STRESSES, BY DEVELOPING STRUCTURAL CONTINUITY THROUGH COMPOSITE CONSTRUCTION AND BY PRESTRESSING. AS A RESULT OF THESE TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGES, THE PROBLEM OF VOLUME CHANGES RESULTING FROM CREEP AND SHRINKAGE OF CONCRETE HAVE BECOME IMPORTANT. THE NATURE OF CREEP AND SHRINKAGE AND THE EFFECT OF THESE VOLUME CHANGES ON DEFLECTION AND STRENGTH OF REINFORCED CONCRETE BRIDGES ARE BEING INVESTIGATED FOR USE IN DESIGN CRITERIA TO PREDICT AND CONTROL DEFLECTIONS. INFORMATION IS BEING OBTAINED ON THE EFFECT OF VARIATION OF THE CONCRETE CONSTITUTENTS, THE INTENSITY AND DURATION OF LOAD, THE ENVIRONMENT, AND THE GEOMETRY OF THE SPECIMENS. THE VARIABLES SELECTED FOR CONSIDERATION WERE' SIZE, SHAPE, LENGTH, STRESS INTENSITY, CURING CONDITIONS, WATER-CEMENT RATIO, TYPE OF AGGREGATE, MIX PROPORTIONS /GRADATION, CONSISTENCY, ADMIXTURES/, TIME OF LOAD APPLICATION, ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS /TEMPERATURE, HUMIDITY/, AND REINFORCEMENT /NORMAL, PRESTRESSED/. THE VOLUME CHANGES CAUSED BY CREEP AND SHRINKAGE ARE MEASURED IN TERMS OF LATERAL AND LONGITUDINAL STRAIN. THE EQUIPMENT USED IN THE LABORATORY TO OBTAIN THIS INFORMATION INCLUDES' A HYDRAULIC LOADING SYSTEM, A SPRING MEASURING DEVICE, AND A STRAIN MEASURING DEVICE, AND A MECHANICAL COMPRESSOMETER TO MEASURE THE ELASTIC PROPERTIES DURING LOADING.
