SKIDDING ON PAVEMENT SURFACES - CAUSE, EFFECT AND REMEDIES

THE PRESENT REPORT BRINGS UP TO DATE ONE MADE AT THE SAME CONFERENCE A YEAR EARLIER, IN WHICH PRELIMINARY RESULTS WITH A NEW DEVICE FOR MEASURING SKID RESISTANCE WERE DISCUSSED. CONSTRAINTS ON THE USEFULNESS OF SKID NUMBERS ARE EXPLAINED, AFTER WHICH TESTS OF INTERSTATE AND OTHER PAVEMENTS WITH BITUMINOUS AND CONCRETE SURFACES ARE PRESENTED. CHARACTERISTIC OF ALL PAVEMENTS WAS THE HIGH RANGE OF SN VALUES RECORDED, THE RANGE BEING ABOUT 10--25 FOR BITUMINOUS PAVEMENTS AND 10--30 FOR CONCRETE. FOR BITUMINOUS PAVEMENTS IN SERVICE A YEAR OR MORE THE AVERAGE READINGS WERE SN 35-- 55, WHILE FOR PCC THEY WERE 20--40. SURFACE TEXTURE APPEARS TO BE THE ONE PAVEMENT CHARACTERISTIC THAT CORRELATES WELL WITH SN. POLISHING APPEARS TO HAVE A MUCH LESS SEVERE EFFECT ON BITUMINOUS THAN ON PCC PAVEMENTS. ADDITIONALLY, PAVEMENTS IN WIDELY SEPARATED PARTS OF THE STATE EXHIBIT DIFFERENT SN UNDER SIMILAR CONDITIONS, APPARENTLY BECAUSE OF THE MINERALOGICAL CONTENT OF THE CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS.
