PRACTICAL USES OF SPECTRAL ANALYSIS WITH SURFACE DYNAMICS ROAD PROFILOMETER

A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF SPECTRAL AND COHERENCE ANALYSES IS PROVIDED, ALONG WITH SOME PRACTICA EXAMPLES OF THEIR USE. THE FIRST APPLIATION IS AN INVESTIGATION OF DIFFERENCES BETWEEN AN INEXPENSIVE REPLACEMENT ROAD-FOLLOWING WHEEL AND THE STANDARAD WHEEL THAT COMES WITH THE PROFILOMETER. THE SECOND EXAMPLE INVOLVES CONSTRUCTION CONTROL AND IDENTIFICATION OF DIFFERENCES BETWEEN 2 METHODS FOR LAYING ASPHALTIC BASE MATERIALS. BOTH OF THESE INVESTIGATIONS INVOLVED STATISTICALLY DESIGNED EXPERIMENTS SO THAT MORE RELIABLE CONCLUSIONS COULD BE OBTAINED AND CONFIDENCE LIMITS DEFINED. SLOPE VARIANCE AND ROUGHNESS INDEX STATISTICS WERE EXAMINED AND COMPARED WITH THE SPECTRAL AND COHERENCE ANALYSES RESULTS. EXTENSION OF THESE METHODS MAY PROVIDE THE BEST APPROACH YET AVAILABLE FOR DEVELOPMENT OF ADEQUATE ROAD PROFILE SPECIFICATIONS AND CONSTRUCTION CONTROL. /AUTHOR/
