PENETRATION DEPTH OF CHLORIDES AND CARBONIZATION OF CONCRETE ON PARTS OF ROAD BRIDGES MOST AFFECTED BY DEICING SALTS IN RELATION TO THE DENSITY AND AGE OF THE CONCRETE

THE OBJECT OF THE RESEARCH IS TO DETERMINE (1) THOSE PARTS OF A CONCRETE BRIDGE WHERE THE HIGHEST CONCENTRATION OF CHLORIDES OCCURS. THE BASIS FOR THIS IS TO BE EARLIER STUDIES MADE BY THE BUNDESANSTALT FUER STRASSENWESEN, ACCORDING TO WHICH THESE POINTS CAN BE DETERMINED FROM THE GEOMETRY OF THE BRIDGE, THE POSITION OF THE STRUCTURE IN RELATION TO MAIN WIND DIRECTION, AND THE POSITION OF THE SAMPLE POINT IN RELATION TO THE DIRECTION OF THE TRAFFIC. (2) THE DISPERSION WHICH OCCURS IN VOIDS CONTENT AND THE DISTRIBUTION OF VOID SIZES IN THE HARDENED CEMENT OF A STRUCTURE. (3) WHETHER THERE IS A RELATION BETWEEN THE POROSITY AND/OR THE PORE DISTRIBUTION IN THE DIFFERENT CONCRETES OF THE STRUCTURES TO BE EXAMINED AND THE CHLORIDE CONTENT AND/OR PENETRATION DEPTH OF THE CHLORIDES. (4) WHETHER THE AGE OF THE CONCRETE AFFECTS THE CHLORIDE PENETRATION DEPTH AND THE CHLORIDE CONTENT. (5) WHETHER THE CARBONIZATION AFFECTS THE PENETRATION OF THE CHLORIDES. A BRIDGE WHICH IS TO BE DEMOLISHED IS TO SERVE FOR DEALING WITH POINTS (1) AND (2), AND A CONCRETE BRIDGE ON THE FEDERAL MOTORWAY A6 IS TO BE USED FOR DEALING WITH POINTS (3) AND (4).
