DATA ON IMPACT DAMAGE SUSTAINED AT CRASH BARRIERS ON BRIDGES WERE COLLECTED OVER A PERIOD OF THREE YEARS BY THE ROAD CONSTRUCTION AUTHORITIES. THE OBJECT WAS TO STUDY THE DURABILITY OF THE PROTECTIVE DEVICES (DUAL RAIL BARRIERS AND PARAPETS). THE TWO TYPES OF ANCHORAGE WHICH OCCURRED MOST FREQUENTLY IN THE CASE OF THE DUAL RAIL BARRIERS WERE BASE PLATES WITH ANCHOR BARS AND EXPANDING DOWELS. ANCHORAGES WHICH WERE FOUND TO BE DAMAGED AFTER IMPACT WERE MORE FREQUENTLY THE EXPANDING DOWEL TYPE THAN THE BASE PLATE TYPE. WITH RESPECT TO THE SAFETY ASPECT, I.E. PREVENTION OF VEHICLES RUNNING OFF BRIDGES, CONVENTIONAL DESIGNS OF SAFETY FENCES WERE FOUND TO BE EFFECTIVE.
