CORROSION PROTECTION SYSTEMS ON STEEL BRIDGES ON FEDERAL GERMAN MAIN ROADS

THE OBJECT OF THE WORK WAS TO MAKE A SYSTEMATIC SURVEY OF THE STATE OF THE ART AND PERFORMANCE OF CORROSION PROTECTION SYSTEMS ON STEEL BRIDGES. QUESTIONNAIRES WERE SENT TO THE RELEVANT ROAD CONSTRUCTION AUTHORITIES TO OBTAIN INFORMATION ON STRUCTURE AND DESIGN, AND TYPE, APPLICATION AND PERFORMANCE OF THE CORROSION PROTECTION USED. THE MAIN BRIDGES CONSIDERED WERE THOSE HAVING A TOTAL SURFACE AREA OF ABOUT 5.1 MILLION SQUARE METRES, I.E. ABOUT 50 PERCENT OF THE BRIDGES IN QUESTION. THE SURVEY RESULTED IN TECHNICAL DATA ON THE PROTECTION AGENTS USED AND SHOWED THAT PROTECTION SYSTEMS USED HITHERTO LAST FROM 10 TO 15 YEARS.
