GRASS PLANTING ALONG HIGHWAYS - 1 - INITIAL FERTILIZATION

L'ENGAZONNEMENT DES EMPRISES ROUTIERES - 1 - ETUDE DE LA FERTILISATION D'ETABLISSEMENT

THIS ARTICLE DESCRIBES THE TRIAL SOWING OF GRASS ON THE SLOPE OF A CUTTING IN MAY 1976 AND THE OBSERVATIONS MADE OVER THE FOLLOWING 16 MONTHS. THE SLOPE HAD NO FERTILE SOIL COVERING. THE OBJECT OF THE EXPERIMENT WAS TO STUDY THE PARAMETERS ESSENTIAL TO THE INITIAL FERTILIZATION OF GRASS SEEDING SUCH AS THEY ARE MENTIONED IN THE 1974 TECHNICAL INFORMATION NOTE: "GRASS PLANTING ALONG HIGHWAYS": PROPORTION OF FERTILIZER, DISTRIBUTION OVER A PERIOD OF TIME, FERTILIZER FORMULA. IT WAS OBSERVED THAT: (1) THE PERCENTAGE OF SOIL COVER, THE HEIGHT OF LEAVES AND STEMS, THE QUANTITY OF DRY MATERIAL PRODUCED PER UNIT OF SURFACE BEFORE THE FIRST MOWING, INCREASED WITH THE QUANTITY OF FERTILIZER APPLIED, THE EQUATIONS EXPRESSING THE RELATION BEING LOGARITHMIC OR LINEAR. LARGE DOSES OF FERTILIZER (200 TO 300 KG PER HECTARE OF EACH MAIN FERTILIZER: NITROGEN, PHOSPHORIC ACID, POTASSIUM) ARE NECESSARY TO OBTAIN A RAPID COVERAGE OF THE SOIL, BUT THEY MAKE MOWING NECESSARY BECAUSE OF THE RAPID GROWTH OF GRASS. QUANTITIES OF 30 TO 60 KG PER HECTARE ARE NOT SUFFICIENT; (2) BREAKING DOWN THE INITIAL APPLICATION OF FERTILIZER INTO 2 APPLICATIONS (AT 11 MONTH INTERVALS) DID NOT PROVE WORTHWHILE ON THIS TYPE OF SOIL; (3) THE BEST PROPORTION WAS AN EQUAL AMOUNT OF EACH OF THE MAIN FERTILIZERS. THIS PAPER WAS PRESENTED TO THE INTER-LCPC INFORMATION DAYS ON "GRASS PLANTING ALONG HIGHWAYS" 6, 7 DECEMBER 1978, IN PARIS.
