EFFECT OF SHEAR STRESS ON THE PERMISSIBLE VOIDS IN FILLET WELDS IN PREFABRICATED COATINGS

IN THE NEW VERSION OF DAST-RI 006 - WELDING OVER OF PREFRABRICATED COATINGS IN STEEL ENGINEERING - VALUES ARE GIVEN FOR THE PERMISSIBLE VOLUME OF VOIDS DURING THE WELDING; IF THESE VALUES ARE ADHERED TO THEY ARE REGARDED AS A SUFFICIENT CHECK ON THE QUALITY OF THE WELD. THE VALUES GIVEN ARE BASED ON THE RESULTS OF TESTS CARRIED OUT ON FILLET WELDS ON PREFABRICATED COATINGS SUBJECTED TO LONGITUDINAL AND TRANSVERSE STRESS. FOR THESE TESTS THE WELDS WERE AT THE FOCAL POINT OF THE CROSS SECTION OF THE SAMPLE, I.E. THEY WERE NOT SUBJECTED TO SHEAR STRESS. IT IS THUS NOT POSSIBLE TO OBTAIN INFORMATION ON THE EFFECT OF AN ADDITIONAL SHEAR STRESS ON THE PERMISSIBLE VOIDS SURFACE. THIS RESEARCH IS INTENDED TO REMEDY THIS BY UNDERTAKING SHEAR TESTING. IF THE SAME RESULTS ARE OBTAINED, I.E. THERE IS NO NOTABLE DECREASE IN STRENGTH GIVEN A VOIDS CONTENT OF UP TO 10 PERCENT, THE SIMULTANEOUS ACTION OF NORMAL AND SHEAR STRESS ON THE WELDED SEAM WILL BE REGARDED AS BEING COVERED IN THE NORMAL CHECKS.
