USE OF SLAG WITH A HIGH FINES CONTENT FOR ROADBASE STABILIZATION

THE AUTHORS DESCRIBE TWO EXPERIMENTS CARRIED OUT IN 1975 AND 1976 BY THE REGIONAL LABORATORY IN AUTUN CONCERNING THE USE OF SLAG WITH A HIGH FINES CONTENT: PRECRUSHED SLAG WITH 20% FINES AND GROUND SLAG. THE MANUFACTURE OF SLAG CONTAINING 20% FINES WITH A ROD GRINDER REDUCES THE OUTPUT APPROXIMATELY BY HALF COMPARED WITH A 10% FINES CONTENT. LABORATORY TESTS SHOW THAT THE MECHANICAL BEHAVIOUR OF GRAVEL-SLAG PRODUCED FROM THIS PRECRUSHED SLAG, IS VERY SATISFACTORY. PRODUCTION TESTS, IN PARTICULAR TESTS ON FLOW THROUGH A CONVENTIONAL HOPPER SHOW THAT CORRECT FLOW REQUIRES TWO CROSSED VIBRATORS AND THAT REGULARITY IS LESS SATISFACTORY THAN THAT OF PRECRUSHED SLAG CONTAINING 10% FINES. THE LAYING OF GRAVEL-SLAG MANUFACTURED BY THIS PROCESS FOLLOWS A TRADITIONAL PATTERN. GROUND SLAG IS PRODUCED IN A BALL GRINDER (COARSE GRINDER). WITH SILICEOUS AGGREGATES GROUND GRAVEL-SLAG REMAINS WORKABLE ON SITE FOR AT LEAST 15 HOURS. THE PERFORMANCE OBTAINED IS PARTICULARLY SATISFACTORY. PRODUCTION, LAYING AND TIME-RELATED EVOLUTION SHOW THE INTEREST OF THIS TECHNIQUE.
