CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF THE ONE-DIMENSIONAL CONSOLIDATION THEORY OF TERZAGHI

ANALYSE CRITIQUE DE LA THEORIE DE CONSOLIDATION UNIDIMENSIONNELLE DE TERZAGHI

THE USE OF A NUMERICAL SOLUTION METHOD ENABLED ONE-DIMENSIONAL CONSOLIDATION TO BE DEALT WITH WITH LESS RESTRICTIVE ASSUMPTIONS THAN THOSE OF TERZAGHI AND TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE INFLUENCE OF SOME FACTORS (OVERCONSOLIDATION OF THE SOIL, ESPECIALLY) ON THE CONSOLIDATION PROCESS OF FINE SOILS. THIS ARTICLE OUTLINES THE RESULTS OF THIS THEORETICAL STUDY. THE AUTHORS RECALL THE TERZAGHI THEORY, ITS ASSUMPTIONS AND IMPLICATIONS. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE RESULTS OF CALCULATIONS MADE WITH THE CONMULT PROGRAM, IN WHICH THE SOIL FOLLOWS A LAW OF LINEAR COMPRESSIBILITY, HAS A PERMEABILITY VARYING WITH THE VOIDS INDEX, AND A VARIABLE CONSOLIDATION COEFFICIENT THAT IS RECALCULATED AT EACH ITERATION OF THE COMPUTATION: FOR THE OEDOMETER LOADING OF A HIGHLY OVERCONSOLIDATED SOIL SAMPLE, THE CALCULATED BEHAVIOUR IS MARKEDLY DIFFERENT FROM THE PREDICTIONS OBTAINED WITH THE TERZAGHI THEORY, PARTICULARLY AS REGARDS THE EVOLUTION OF INTERSTITIAL OVERPRESSURE ISOCHRONES. THE AUTHORS CONCLUDE THAT IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO OBTAIN A SATISFACTORY FORECAST OF THE TIME-RELATED EVOLUTION IN INTERSTITIAL OVERPRESSURE AND THAT THIS IS DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE CONSOLIDATION COEFFICIENT IS NOT AN INTRINSIC SOIL PARAMETER AND THAT IT VARIES CONSTANTLY.
