SERVICES TO THE USER ON MOTORWAYS OPERATED BY CONCESSIONARY FIRMS

LES SERVICES A L'USAGER SUR LES AUTOROUTES CONCEDEES

EXTRACT FROM JOURNEES D'ETUDES ET D'INFORMATION, SECAP, PARIS, MAY 1979. IN FRANCE, THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVE HAS BEEN TO MAKE UP FOR THE DELAY IN MOTORWAY INFRASTRUCTURE. FROM THE BEGINNING, THE PREOCCUPATION HAS BEEN SERVICE TO THE USER, BY INSTALLING TELEPHONE BOOTHS, INFORMATION SIGNS, FILLING STATIONS, RESTAURANTS, REST AREAS. IT HAS BECOME MORE AND MORE NECESSARY TO RESPOND TO THE MOTORIST'S SUPPLEMENTARY NEEDS RATHER THAN JUST THOSE NECESSARY FOR DRIVING ALONG MOTORWAYS. IMPROVEMENTS IN USER SERVICES HAVE RESULTED IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF MORE ECONOMIC RESTAURANTS OF MORE FUNCTIONAL BUT ATTRACTIVE DESIGN, SHOPS SELLING REGIONAL PRODUCTS AND PROVIDING INFORMATION ON THE LOCAL REGIONS. TRAFFIC SIGNS ARE UPDATED. REST AREAS ARE ENLARGED AND BEAUTIFIED. PARTICULAR SITES FOR PANORAMIC VIEWS OR OF HISTORICAL INTEREST ARE SET UP, SUCH AS THE "PYRAMIDE DE LA GARE DU PERTHUS" AND THE "ARCHEODROME" IN THE BEAUNE REGION.
