RECENT TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENTS IN MOTORWAYS

EVOLUTIONS TECHNIQUES RECENTES DANS LE DOMAINE DES AUTOROUTES

DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF FRENCH MOTORWAYS HAVE BEEN IMPORTANT FACTORS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING TECHNIQUES GENERALLY. COMPUTERS HAVE AIDED THE SELECTION OF THE OPTIMUM ALIGNMENT WHILST STILL RESPECTING ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS. EARTHWORKS USE MODERN TECHNIQUES MORE AND MORE FOR REUTILISING EXCAVATED MATERIAL IRRESPECTIVE OF THE WEATHER DURING CONSTRUCTION. THE VERY LARGE NUMBER OF WORKS CONSTRUCTED IN VERY SHORT CONTRACT PERIODS HAS LED TO THE STANDARDISATION OF TYPES AND PREFABRICATION OF UNITS WITHOUT SACRIFICING AESTHETICS. THE REQUIREMENTS OF USERS, THE DESIRE FOR THEIR SAFETY, HAVE LED TO THE CONSTRUCTION OF PAVEMENTS WHICH ARE SAFER AND MORE COMFORTABLE, WHEREAS THE ENERGY CRISIS HAS NECESSITATED RESEARCH INTO SUBSTITUTE MATERIALS. IN ORDER TO FACILITATE THE FIXING OF TOLLS AND TO ALLOW BETTER CONTROL, THE OPERATING AUTHORITIES HAVE, IN CONJUNCTION WITH MANUFACTURERS, DEVELOPED EQUIPMENT WHICH IS BECOMING MORE AND MORE PRACTICAL AND EFFICIENT.
