COMPACTION OF LONGITUDINAL JOINTS IN HOT-COATED MATERIALS

LE COMPACTAGE DU JOINT LONGITUDINAL DES ENROBES A CHAUD

VARIOUS METHODS WERE DEVELOPED IN AN ATTEMPT TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM OF LONGITUDINAL JOINTS OBTAINED DURING SPREADING IN SEVERAL PASSES. THE METHOD WHICH SEEMS TO OFFER THE MOST ADVANTAGES USES NEW EQUIPMENT: A SMALL TILTING WHEEL WHICH IS FIXED ON THE SIDE OF A CONVENTIONAL PNEUMATIC-TYRED COMPACTOR AND ABUTS AGAINST THE EDGE OF THE BITUMINOUS STRIP WHEN THE PNEUMATIC-TYRED ROLLER PASSES OVER THE EXTREME EDGE OF THE STRIP. MENTION IS MADE OF THE TESTS CARRIED OUT IN 1973 AND 1974 WITH THE PROTOTYPE MACHINES BUILT BY THE COMPANY ALBARET. THE TEST RESULTS LED TO THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE FIRST MASS-PRODUCED MACHINE IN 1976. THE DESCRIPTION OF THIS MACHINE IS GIVEN TOGETHER WITH RULES OF UTILIZATION TO BE ADHERED TO IF FULLY SATISFACTORY RESULTS ARE TO BE ACHIEVED. THE AUTHORS QUANTIFY THE POSSIBILITIES OF THE MACHINE FOR DIFFERENT SPREADING SITES, USING THE RESULTS OBTAINED OVER 3 YEARS OF USE IN THE RHONE-ALPES REGION.
