BITUMINOUS MIXTURES

LES ENROBES BITUMINEUX

THIS IS AN UPDATING OF EARLIER VOLUMES PUBLISHED IN 1971 (NO 9) AND 1975 (NO 5). THE BITUMINOUS MIXTURE TECHNIQUE EVOLVED AND NOW TAKES INTO ACCOUNT THE NEED FOR ENERGY CONSERVATION. NEW MIX DESIGN FORMULAE WERE DEVELOPED, AND IMPROVEMENTS WERE MADE TO THE MANUFACTURING, LAYING AND CONTROL EQUIPMENT. IN FRANCE THE TENDENCY AS REGARDS MAINTENANCE IS TO USE SPECIFIC FORMULAE WHICH DIFFER FOR THE APPLICATION OF THIN BITUMINOUS LAYERS WHILE RETAINING THEIR SKIDDING RESISTANCE AND RESISTANCE TO TRACKING. THE DESIRE TO CONSERVE ENERGY LED TO THE ADDITION OF ASPHALT POWDER, BITUMINOUS SHALE, AND SULPHUR TO THE BINDER. AS REGARDS NEW FORMULAE FOR ASPHALTIC CONCRETE, NEW CONCEPTIONS ON DISCONTINUOUS GRADING MIXTURES, SPREADING OF PRECOATED CHIPPINGS, OPEN DRAINAGE MIXTURES, USE OF MODIFIED BINDERS, COAL PITCH BITUMEN OR BITUMEN TO WHICH POLYMER HAS BEEN ADDED, ASPHALTIC POWDER, ASBESTOS OR SULPHUR POWDER, USE OF SYNTHETIC AGGREGATES, LIGHTWEIGHT AGGREGATES, AND PLASTICS BY-PRODUCTS ARE MENTIONED. IN THE FIELD OF EQUIPMENT, IMPROVEMENT IN ACCURACY AND DEVELOPMENT OF NEW MEASURING APPARATUS ARE THE SALIENT POINTS. MENTION IS MADE OF THE EVOLUTION OF MIXING PLANTS, COMPACTION MACHINES, FINISHERS AND OF THE DECLINE IN FRANCE OF COMPLETELY MECHANICAL EQUIPMENT AND THE PROGRESS IN HYDROSTATIC FINISHERS. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF NEW MAINTENANCE TECHNIQUES: PLANNING AND LAYING OF A THIN CARPET, REPAVING AND RECYCLING.
