THE USE OF FLY-ASH AND COAL SHALE: SURSCHISTES AND SUREX PROCESSES

UTILISATION DES CENDRES VOLANTES ET DES SCHISTES HOUILLERS : PROCEDES SURSCHISTES ET SUREX

THIS PAPER WAS PRESENTED AT THE INFORMATION DAYS "WASTE AND INDUSTRIAL BY-PRODUCTS - ELIMINATION, RECYCLING IMPROVEMENT" ORGANIZED BY THE INRA IN LYON, 25-27 SEPTEMBER 1975. FIGURES AND GRAPHS ARE GIVEN, WHICH ILLUSTRATE THE 14-YEAR EVOLUTION IN THE MANUFACTURE AND USE OF FLY-ASH. AS REGARDS ROAD CONSTRUCTION FLY-ASH USED ON ITS OWN FOR EMBANKMENT AND MECHANICAL STABILIZATION OR IN MIXTURES FOR PAVEMENTS GIVES FULL SATISFACTION. FORMULAE THAT ARE PERFECTLY DEVELOPED ENABLE FLY-ASH TO BE USED AFTER TREATMENT IN ROADBASES OR IN HYDRAULIC BINDERS FOR SUBBASES FOR MOTORWAYS OR SECONDARY ROADS. THE ECONOMIC ADVANTAGE IS QUANTIFIED, AND MENTION IS MADE OF THE 120000 TONNES OF FUEL/YEAR SAVED FOR THE CEMENT INDUSTRY. DATA ARE ALSO PRESENTED ON COAL SHALE, THE QUALITY OF THE MATERIALS OBTAINED BY CRUSHING AND SIEVING EXPANDED LIGHTWEIGHT SHALE AGGREGATES, SKETCH OF THE HULLUCH FACTORY, THE EXTENDING USE OF THIS PRODUCT (1 BRIDGE IN 1971, 9 OTHERS AT THE END OF 1976), AND THE NEED OF CONTINUING RESEARCH ON THE USE OF THESE PRODUCTS IN NEW FIELDS.
