IMPACT OF CONTINUITY OF ENGINEERING ON CONSTRUCTION SCHEDULE

USING THE EXPERIENCE GAINED ON SEVERAL CONSTRUCTION SITES, THE AUTHORS SHOW THAT IF CERTAIN THEORIES CAN GIVE REASONABLE RESULTS AS REGARDS FAILURE CONDITIONS OF STRUCTURES RESTING IN SOIL DUE TO THE MOVEMENTS AND DEFORMATIONS OF THE LATTER, FORECASTS ARE MARKEDLY LESS RELIABLE BECAUSE OF THE UNCERTAIN CHARACTER OF THE GEOMETRIC PARAMETERS USED. TO COME NEARER REAL CONDITIONS, IT IS NECESSARY IN ALL CASES TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT CONSTRUCTION METHODS, THEIR INFLUENCE ON GEOTECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS AND THE BEHAVIOUR OF LOADS TRANSFERRED TO STRUCTURES. BETWEEN THE DESIGN OF A STRUCTURE AND ITS CONSTRUCTION THERE EXISTS AN INTERACTION WHICH IS PARTICULARLY MARKED FOR GEOTECHNICAL PROBLEMS SO MUCH SO THAT IF UNEXPECTED SOIL CONDITIONS OCCUR, THE WHOLE DESIGN MAY HAVE TO BE RECONSIDERED. AN EFFICIENT COMMUNICATION SYSTEM MUST BE ESTABLISHED BETWEEN THE COMPETENT PARTIES INVOLVED, WHICH MUST CONSIDER IN THE FIRST PLACE NOT THEIR COMMITMENTS (WHICH ARE THE OBJECT OF THE CONTRACTS) BUT THE CONDITIONS NEEDED FOR THE DESIGN TO BECOME OPERATIONAL. THE PLANNING OF LARGE-SCALE WORKS HAS A DECISIVE INFLUENCE ON THE FINANCING POLICY OF THE WORKS, AND THE SMALLEST ERRORS CAN CAUSE LOSSES OUT OF ALL PROPORTION WITH THE COST OF THE PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN TO LIMIT THOSE DISAPPOINTMENTS. LASTLY THE AUTHORS RECALL THE BENEFITS DERIVED FROM THE FOLLOW-UP STUDY OF CONSTRUCTION OPERATIONS AND THE CONDITIONS FOR THE SETTING UP OF THIS STUDY.
