FREE TORSION TEST, AN IMPORTANT CONTRIBUTION TO THE STUDY OF THE BEHAVIOUR OF FOUNDATIONS SUBJECTED TO GROUND VIBRATION WAVES

A DRAINED AND UNDISTURBED SAMPLE OF GIVEN DIMENSIONS WAS PLACED IN A TRIAXIAL CELL UNDER GIVEN LATERAL PRESSURE AFTER CONSOLIDATION. A SLIGHT TORSIONAL STRESS WAS APPLIED TO THE SAMPLE. THE ELASTIC REACTION OF THE SAMPLE CAUSED A DAMPENED OSCILLATION WHICH WAS MEASURED AND RECORDED. IT WAS SHOWN THAT THE WAVES PROPAGATE IN THE SAMPLE UNDER THE EFFECT OF CHANGE IN THE TORSIONAL MOMENT. USING THE OSCILLATION CURVES RECORDED AND IDENTIFIED AS TRANSVERSE WAVE CURVES IT WAS SHOWN HOW TO CALCULATE THE DYNAMIC SHEAR MODULUS AND TRANSVERSE WAVE PROPAGATION VELOCITY. AS EXAMPLE THE AUTHOR GIVES THE OSCILLATION CURVES MEASURED, THE DYNAMIC SHEAR MODULUS CALCULATED VALUE AND THE VELOCITY OF TRANSVERSE WAVE PROPAGATION FOR A SAMPLE OF SILTY PEAT TAKEN FROM A BOREHOLE IN DOEL.
