BITUMINOUS SURFACINGS IN SWITZERLAND

LES REVETEMENTS HYDROCARBONES EN SUISSE

THIS ARTICLE DESCRIBES A JOURNEY IN SWITZERLAND ORGANIZED BY THE BELGIAN CENTRE FOR INFORMATION ON BITUMEN ON 15, 16 AND 17 JUNE, 1977. MENTION IS MADE OF THE SURFACE DRESSINGS USED IN SWITZERLAND, WHICH ARE DIFFERENT FROM THOSE USED IN BELGIUM. THE BITUMINOUS MIXTURES MUST HAVE AN INCREASED RESISTANCE TO PERMANENT DEFORMATIONS ACCORDING TO THE SERIES STANDARD SNV 640.431. BITUMINOUS MIXTURES ARE TESTED FOR THEIR BINDER CONTENT, SPECIFIC WEIGHT, FILLER/BINDER RATIO AND SUBJECTED TO THE MARSHALL TEST. PROBLEMS OF APPLICATION ARE DISCUSSED, AND ATTENTION IS DRAWN TO THE FACT THAT IT IS NECESSARY TO TAKE TWO TRAFFIC CHARACTERISTICS IN SWITZERLAND INTO ACCOUNT: 10 T AXLE LOAD AND LIGHTER TRAFFIC VOLUME THAN IN OTHER COUNTRIES SUCH AS BELGIUM. A BRIEF DESCRIPTION IS PRESENTED OF THE VIADUCTS IN CHILLON AND LA GRUYERE.
