BEARING CAPACITY OF AN AUGER DRILLED PILE IN SOUND FRAGMENTED CHALK

PORTANCE D'UN PIEU FORE A LA TARIERE DANS UNE CRAIE SAINE FRAGMENTEE

THIS ARTICLE PRESENTS THE MAIN RESULTS OF A FULL-SCALE LOADING TEST ON A PILE, AUGER DRILLED UNDER BENTONITE IN SOUND FRAGMENTED SENONIAN CHALK. THE TEST WAS CARRIED OUT WITH A VIEW (1) TO OBTAINING ADDITIONAL DATA ON STRENGTH, LATERAL FRICTION AND END-BEARING RESISTANCE VALUES ALREADY OBTAINED FOR OTHER PILES DRILLED IN SIMILAR CHALK AND (2) TO QUANTIFYING THE INFLUENCE OF THIS DRILLING TECHNIQUE ON THE SAME PARAMETERS. THE REAL OVERALL BEARING CAPACITY OF THE PILE TESTED WAS COMPARED WITH VALUES CALCULATED BY MEANS OF PRESSIOMETER AND PENETROMETER TECHNIQUES. THE PROCESSING OF THE RESULTS SHOWED THE MARKED INFLUENCE OF THE DRILLING TECHNIQUE ON THE BEARING CAPACITY VARIABLES. FOR INSTANCE, IT WAS OBSERVED THAT, FOLLOWING THE DISTURBANCE OF THE WALLS OF THE BORE HOLE, UNIT LATERAL FRICTION VALUES WERE TWO TO THREE TIMES LOWER THAN THE VALUES OBTAINED WITH SIMILAR TYPES OF CHALK. END-BEARING RESISTANCE WAS, ON AVERAGE, NEARLY TEN TIMES LOWER THAN THE CALCULATED VALUE.
