THE ROAD NETWORK IN TUNISIA

LE RESEAU TUNISIEN

THIS REPORT WAS PRESENTED AT THE 3RD AFRICAN ROAD CONFERENCE, ABIDJAN, 24-30 OCTOBER, 1976. THE TUNISIAN ROAD NETWORK IS DESCRIBED IN ITS GENERAL CONTEXT (GENERAL GEOPHYSICAL DATA ON TUNISIA AND ITS TRANSPORT INFRASTRUCTURE). THE STATE ROAD NETWORK COMPRISES 8000 KM OF METALLED ROADS, 800 KM OF GRAVEL ROADS, 8200 KM OF EARTH ROADS, E.G. 17000 KM ON WHICH 1400 ENGINEERING STRUCTURES ARE BUILT. THE RURAL NETWORK CONSISTS OF 30000 KM OF REGIONAL AND AGRICULTURAL TRACKS, AND THE MUNICIPAL NETWORK 30 MILLION M2 OF PAVEMENTS OVER HALF OF WHICH IS SURFACED. CURRENT AND FUTURE PROGRAMMES (MAINTENANCE AND MODERNIZATION OF ROADS TO THE SOUTH AND TO LIBYA, TO THE WEST, AND TO ALGERIA IN THE NORTH) ARE DESCRIBED. THESE PROGRAMMES COMPRISE ALSO THE IMPROVEMENT OF AN EXTENSIVE NETWORK OF AGRICULTURAL TRACKS, CONSTRUCTION OF ACCESS ROADS TO LARGE TOWNS, PREVENTION OF FLOODING AND REMOVAL OF THREAT OF THE LATTER ON SOME ITINERARIES. MENTION IS MADE OF THE PART PLAYED BY TUNISIA IN THE TRANSAHARIAN PROJECT.
