PRESTRESSING OF CONTINUOUS GIRDERS

SUR LA PRECONTRAINTE DES POUTRES CONTINUES

A STUDY IS PRESENTED OF THE EFFECT OF ANY TYPE OF PRESTRESSING CABLE ON A CONTINUOUS CONCRETE GIRDER. THIS STUDY, BASED ON THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PRESTRESSING LINE GIVEN BY THE CABLE, LEADS TO DISTINGUISHING BETWEEN TWO VERY DIFFERENT PARTS IN THE CABLE: (1) "CLEARWAY" SPANS WHICH THE CABLE CROSSES OVER THEIR WHOLE LENGTH AND (2) "ANCHORAGE" SPANS INSIDE WHICH THE CABLE IS ANCHORED. FROM THIS STUDY ARE DEDUCED METHODS OF DETERMINING AN OPTIMUM CABLE SYSTEM FOR TWO OPPOSITE CASES OF CONTINUOUS CONCRETE GIRDERS: IN ONE THE CABLE CROSSES THE GIRDER OVER ITS WHOLE LENGTH (ALL SPANS ARE "CLEARWAY" SPANS), IN THE OTHER PROGRESS TAKES PLACE SPAN BY SPAN (EACH SPAN IS AN "ANCHORAGE" SPAN).
