HUMAN ERROR AND TECHNICAL DEFECTS ASSOCIATED WITH THE SAFETY BELT AS A CAUSE OF INJURY

MENSCHLICHE UND TECHNISCHE FEHLER AM SICHERHEITSGURTSYSTEM ALS VERLETZUNGSURSACHE

BETWEEN FEBRUARY 1973 AND APRIL 1977, 843 ROAD ACCIDENTS INVOLVING PERSONAL INJURY WERE DOCUMENTED IN INDIVIDUAL CASE ANALYSES AT THE ACCIDENT SITES. TO EXCLUDE THE EFFECT OF IMPACT DIRECTION ON INJURY, 81 FRONTAL IMPACTS WITH A TOTAL OF 110 BELTED OCCUPANTS (ADULTS) WERE EXAMINED. INJURY SEVERITY WAS EVALUATED ACCORDING TO OAIS, AND THE VEHICLE DEFORMATION INDEX (VDI) WAS USED AS A MEASURE OF THE DEGREE OF DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE. ACCURATE STUDIES OF THE SAFETY BELT CLARIFIED THE QUESTION OF THE USE OF THE BELT. VEHICLE OCCUPANTS WERE ASSIGNED TO GROUP 1 (NO MALFUNCTION OF THE SYSTEM) OR GROUP 2 (MALFUNCTION OF THE SYSTEM). WITH INCREASED VDI THE TOTAL INJURY SEVERITY INCREASED FOR ALL 110 OCCUPANTS. THE INCREASE WAS HOWEVER SIGNIFICANTLY LESS MARKED FOR GROUP 1. ALL 33 OCCUPANTS OF GROUP 2 WERE INJURED, 9 SEVERELY AND 7 FATALLY. THE MOST FREQUENT CAUSES OF MALFUNCTIONING ARE DISCUSSED. THE COVERING ABSTRACT FOR THE CONFERENCE IS IRRD NO 309468.
